Steve did an amazing job on this - boom, one take. I was in the control booth as he did it, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. He absolutely nailed it's spookiness... I'd wanted to write something about WW1 since I was a child. I went to see 'Oh What A Lovely War' when I was a kid, and while most of the film is revisionist rubbish, the scene where the soldier who has been killed - but doesn't know he's dead - who follows a line of poppies until the fields are bursting with them, made a profound impression on me. Remembrance Day is very important to me - every year, I thank my lucky stars I wasn't born in the era when I would have been conscripted - and undoubtedly killed - on the Western Front.

There have been many great WW1 songs - check out the wonderful Zombies tune about the butcher's boy on 'Odyssey And Oracle', not to mention P.J. Harvey's fantastic songwriting on 'Let England Shake'. My take on it was to come up with a ghost story - a young man hallucinates his own death minutes before it happens, and then his sweetheart relives his unimaginable experiences through a haunted pocket watch ...

God rest the Accrincton Pals and all the other men on both sides lost on that terrible day - July 1st 1917. We are still, in so many ways, coming to terms with the horror of that first mechanised war - it certainly set the bar for senseless brutality.
